The project ‘AI-Powered Wearable Navigation Aid for the Visually Impaired’ won second place in Pilikula Regional Science Centreat

The project ‘AI-Powered Wearable Navigation Aid for the Visually Impaired’ – a solution designed to revolutionize mobility for those who need it most, developed by Mohammad Anzil Parveez and Rakshith Rao from the Department of AIML, secured 2nd place out of more than 39 projects showcased at the Innovation Fair held at the Pilikula Regional Science Centre in Vamanjoor on March 28th, 2025. Over 25 colleges participated in the event. The students were awarded the books “Rockets and Beyond" from ISRO and "All About Satellites."
The event wasn't just about showcasing innovative projects, but also provided a unique opportunity to learn from some of the brightest minds in the industry. The panel discussions offered valuable insights on various topics, including:
How to turn an idea into a startup
• Funding opportunities and government support for young innovators
• Why execution is more important than just having a great idea
• Building sustainable and scalable solutions for the future
Guided by Mr. Sharathchandra N R, Anzil's project demonstrated outstanding innovation and technical excellence, earning recognition among numerous participants. This achievement highlights the ingenuity and research capabilities of students in emerging AI and ML technologies.

Tech Week-Day 1: Serverless Unleashed: Mastering AWS Lambda with Serverless Framework

As part of Tech Week, the Sahyadri Open-Source Community (SOSC) hosted ‘Serverless Unleashed’, a session by Pratheek Shetty, 3rd year CSE, on AWS Lambda and Serverless Framework. He explained the differences between traditional server-based deployment and serverless models, demonstrating how to develop and deploy an Express.js API on AWS EC2 and AWS Lambda using AWS SAM. He also guided participants through creating a Lambda function, setting up a trigger using API Gateway, and deploying a Lambda function with the Serverless Framework. Additionally, he demonstrated hosting an Express app on AWS Lambda using the Serverless Framework and the serverless-http module. Attendees gained hands-on experience with API development, firewall rules, traffic monitoring, and cost-effective cloud deployment strategies, making the session a valuable learning experience.

Dr Prabhu interacts with Hubli Darward Police Commissionerate

Dr. Ananth Prabhu G, Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and Principal Investigator at the Digital Forensics and Cyber Security Centre of Excellence was invited by the Hubli Dharwad Police Commissionerate to interact with the officers on New Generation Cyber Crimes.
Dr Prabhu interacted with Mr Shashi Kumar, IPS - Commissioner of Police, DCP Raveesh, KSPS, Mr. Gopal Byakod, IPS and Mr. Mahaning N, IPS. After the 2-hour interaction, Dr Prabhu visited the nearby Government College to interact with the students as a part of the #CyberSafeKarnataka initiative. He was ceremonially welcomed by the NCC cadets.

MBA Faculty Conducts POSH Awareness Program at GAIL Mangalore Petrochemicals Ltd, Mangaluru

Dr. Sushma V, Associate Professor, Dept. of Business Administration (MBA), was invited as a resource person for the annual POSH (Prevention of Sexual Harassment) Awareness Program at GAIL India, Mangaluru. Addressing the employees, she emphasized the importance of recognizing and reporting inappropriate behaviours and acts under POSH guidelines to the company’s Internal Committee (IC).

As an external member of the four-member IC at GAIL, Dr. Sushma conducted an interactive quiz on POSH and highlighted key aspects of workplace conduct. She emphasized that in cases of harassment, "it is not the intent but the impact" that matters, illustrating her point with real-world examples. Her session provided valuable insights, reinforcing a safe and respectful workplace culture at GAIL India.
