Sahyadri Triumphs with 19 Prestigious VTU Ranks

Sahyadri students have bagged 19 ranks in the recently released rank list by Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belagavi for the academic year 2023-24. The maximum number of ranks bagged by a college at the state level is Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, Mangalore. Two 1 st ranks have been bagged by Ms. Srividya of Computer Science & Engineering (Data Science) &
Ms. Reshal Kiran Lobo of Computer Science & Engineering (AIML). Out of the 19 ranks, 9 were secured by CSE (AIML), 7 by CSE (Data Science), and 3 by Mechanical Engineering.

Donation of equipment to VTU Nano-Technology Lab and institution of Gold Medal in the name of Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, Mangaluru

Sahyadri has proposed to donate Nano-Tech lab equipment and VTU has accepted and acknowledged the receipt of equipment at the department of Applied Sciences, Centre for Postgraduate Studies, Muddenahalli.
Gold Medal has been instituted in the name of Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management, Mangaluru to be awarded every year to a student who secures highest marks in M.Tech. in Nano Science and Technology, Starting from the batch 2024-25
The equipments donated by Sahyadri will be placed in the Nano Technology Laboratory at the Department of Applied Sciences, Centre for Postgraduate Studies, Muddenahalli with the name displayed as "Donated by Bhandari Foundation @ Shivamogga”. Faculty, Students and Research Scholars of Sahyadri will be permitted to make use of the Laboratory for research purposes.

Placements and Training: Japanese N5 Test conducted for 2nd and 3rd year students

The Japanese N5 test, held on 13th July 2024, attracted 42 student participants. This exam is a significant assessment of basic Japanese language proficiency, covering essential grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension skills at the N5 level, which is suitable for beginners. The test provides a structured evaluation for students pursuing proficiency in Japanese, offering a benchmark for their language learning journey and often serving as a prerequisite for further studies or employment opportunities requiring Japanese language skills.

IEEE Student Branch organized ‘Anvesh 24’, an inter-department Technical Paper Presentation

IEEE Students Branch SCEM in association with IEEE Mangalore Subsection, organized an inter-department Technical Paper Presentation, “Anvesh-24” for students of Sahyadri on 13th July 2024. "Anvesh 24" brought together students from various departments to present and discuss their technical papers, fostering an environment of academic exchange and innovation. The event provided a platform for students to showcase their research, enhance their presentation skills, and receive valuable feedback from their peers, faculty members and experts. Dr. Vasudeva Professor, NMAM Institute of Technology Nitte, Chair IEEE Mangalore Subsection briefed the importance of Anvesh - how research help students to gain technical expertise in respective domain. Dr. S S Injaganeri, Principal mentioned that research is an integral part of academics in engineering. Anvesh helped students and faculty to enhance technical expertise in respective area. Dr. Gurusiddayya Hiremath, IEEE Student Branch Counselor briefed the achievements of students branch from inception and mentioned the highlights of Anvesh 24 - it’s one of the flagship event of IEEE Student Branch SCEM.

After the inauguration, track-wise sessions were conducted by jury. Best two papers were awarded from each track. In each track winner team received Rs. 1,000 Cash prize with certificate and Runner-Up team received Rs. 500 cash prize with certificate. Both IEEE and Non-IEEE students participated and event was coordinated by IEEE student branch office bears and volunteers.

Dr. Ananth Prabhu and his Research Scholar Published Article in Scopus Indexed Q3 Journal

A research paper titled "SANAS-Net: spatial attention neural architecture search breast cancer detection" written by Melwin D Souza, research scholar of Dr. Ananth Prabhu, Professor in the Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering and Principal Investigator at the Digital Forensics and Cyber Security Center of Excellence, is published in International Journal of Artificial Intelligence (Scopus indexed Q2 Journal)

The main contributions of this paper are:

A spatial attention-based NAS-Net method is proposed that develop a spatial attention mechanism that learns to focus on relevant regions within Mammographs
Multi-head attention is used within the transformer blocks to capture diverse spatial relations and feature interactions
Global contextual information is incorporated via introducing positional embeddings to the transformer blocks.
Numerous empirical investigations have been conducted to validate the efficiency of our approach in identifying high-performing fully attentive networks for the identification of both malignant and benign breast cancer.

The proposed model delivered an accuracy of 89.95% compared to the existing model.

MBA Faculty invited as Resource Persons to conduct FDP organized by Canara Institute of Bank Management, Manipal

Prof. Ramesh K G and Prof. Padmanabha B from Dept. of Business Administration were invited as the resource person for a Faculty Development Programme (FDP) organized by Canara Institute of Bank Management, Manipal in association with National Institute of Bank Management, Pune held at Manipal. The participants of the FDP are the officers of Canara Bank who have been posted as faculty members of various Staff Training Colleges of the bank PAN India. The topics covered during the session were Communication Skills, Group Discussion and Role Play.
The participants were given inputs on how various modes of communication will help the bank employees to win the trust of the customer. The sessions were based on hands-on activities so that the learnings can be effective. The topics covered were effective criticism, convincing skills,
This was followed by a session on group discussion where participants were trained as to how to assess trainee’s ability to communicate effectively, think critically, and work collaboratively. They were given inputs as to how to identify and deal with various kinds of personalities that a trainer may encounter during a group discussion.
Later, participants were given certain scenarios which a bank staff may encounter and how a role play can help staff members to react and respond under such circumstances. This helped the participants to build experience and self-confidence with handling the situation in real life, and how one can develop quick and instinctively correct reactions to situations.
