 Awareness Programme on Substance Abuse, Anti-Ragging and Cyber Crime Laws for the First-Year Engineering Students

Department of Academics and NSS division of Sahyadri College in collaboration with The District Police Department organized a much-needed awareness talk for the First year engineering students on issues like Substance Abuse, Anti-Ragging, and Cyber Crime Laws. Mr. K. Rama Rao, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mangalore South Sub-Division and Mr. Bhajantri, Inspector, Mangalore Rural Police Station addressed students about the evils of Substance abuse, Ragging, and Cyber Crime. Emphasizing on substance abuse problem, in his speech, Mr. Rama Rao shared his experiences of the cases he handled relating to drugs and revealed that 90% of the time, the people involved in such cases will be students. He explained the Acts such as NDPA and various Indian Penal Codes applicable for the crimes relating to drug abuse and ragging. He stressed the role of students and teachers in curbing the menace of substance abuse, ragging, and Cyber Crimes. He also explained the various types of substances that are abused and its physical and psychological impact on the students. Talking about the cyber crimes, he explained about CDR (Call Details Records) and how mobile phones can be used to solve the crime and track the culprits. He said that Drugs weakens the society and those involved in it are doing a crime against the society. Mr. Bhajantri spoke about the effects of a substance on an individual’s mind and body. He made the students understand their purpose of attending college and how they must choose to lead their life. Dr. Rajesha, Dean- Academics explained the mechanism put forth by Sahyadri to curb substance abuse, ragging and Cyber Crime. He spoke about the college Anti-ragging committee and squad. He urged the students to report to the committee if any incidence of ragging that may happen to them or their friends. Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal, in his presidential remarks, urged the students to unite against the evils of Substance abuse, Anti-Ragging, and Cybercrimes. Mr. Devadas Hegde, Trustee, Bhandary Foundation graced the programme as the Guest of Honour.
