CET counselling Process Inaugurated at Sahyadri College Campus on 14th July, 2010

Mr. Ramdas Kamath, the vice-president of Infosys inaugurated the Karnataka Examination Authority’s Mangalore centre for CET counselling at Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management.

Congratulating Mangaloreans , Mr. Kamath said that the new CET counselling centre can be considered as another milestone in the in the way of development of Dakshina Kannada district.  “This is a historic day for Mangalore and entire Dakshina Kannada district which is in the forefront of education in the country from centuries ago. Initially Christian missionaries contributed a lot for the cause of educating Mangaloreans. And now, several institutions are rendering their services in the education sector. Hence, one can identify Dakshina Kannada as the highly literate of the country”. He advised the students to take a firm decision about their career and future, saying that one should clear off all ambiguities from the mind and go ahead, if he wants to reach the goal of success.     Talking about the contemporary situation and priorities of the country, he said technology and industry are the root cause for development of any country. We should give utmost priority for modern education, technology, industrialisation and information technology rather than wasting time and money in the field of agriculture”.

Mr Kamath said that the contribution of the agricultural sector to the Gross Domestic Product of the country is a mere 17 per cent whereas around 57 per cent of the population is dependent on it. The IT sector contributes the most to the growth of the economy, he added.  “Information technology is growing at a much higher scale and almost 58 per cent of the employees from Karnataka in the IT sector come from small towns,”.  He said the next 10 years are crucial for the country looking at the way service and other sectors are prospering. Mr. Kamath also urged the government to allow private sector in the education field with full autonomy and to expand skill development-based education.    

Mr. Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP Presiding over the programme,said that he is planning to set up a special team which would conduct a year-long study to find out the needs and necessities of the district. He said the team will suggest the government in order to make progress in the path of development. He requested Kamath to guide the proposed team.

Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, the president of Bhandary Foundation, the patron of Sahyadri Institution, said CET counselling in Mangalore would benefit about 15,000 medical and technical education aspirants of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, parts of Uttara Kannada, Kodagu, some students from Kasargod.  He said it was in 2009, Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) made a historic decision to decentralise the counselling process for the convenience of the students and parents. Accordingly, two centres were started in Hubli and Gulbarga.    In response to the tremendous success of these two centres, KEA has opened two more centres in Shimoga and Mangalore this year.  He said the students can take up counselling at any five centres, even if they have mentioned Bangalore in their application forms.

Mr. Yogish Bhat, MLA and Mr.Prem Prasad Shetty, Nominated Member of Karnataka State Higher Education Board were among those present. Mr. Shruthakeerthi Jain, the CET coordinator, Mangalore welcomed the gathering.
