Day 1, 7th January 2018 - WATER

Water is the most precious gift to humanity by the nature. Life on earth is possible only because of water. Three-fourth surface of the earth is covered by water though there is scarcity. The crisis of water teaches us to conserve & save water in order to sustain, protect the environment, save life and save the world. As a measure to address this crisis, the water utilities have to be utilized and managed effectively. Therefore, focussing on water scarcity, enhancing water efficiency and increasing water productivity have become the call of the day. Hence, one of the themes for Sahyadri Science, Technology & Management Conclave is identifying issues and sharing the best practices in efficient use of water in agriculture, industry and urban area.

Day 2, 8th January 2018 - ENERGY

Energy is the main requirement ever since humans invented steam engines and electricity. Most of the manually done tasks are now replaced by machines that frequently require electrical energy or fossil combustion. Fossil combustion not only makes the energy source scarce but also pollutes the environment. Over the years, significant efforts and initiatives have been taken by the Government and corporate bodies to implement renewable energy and nuclear technologies. On one side, energy efficiency of the existing products and infrastructure is improved by reducing wasted energy and efforts. On the other side, alternative sources of energy such as renewables and nuclear energy based new ideas are being envisaged. The scope of introducing ENERGY as one of the themes in the Sahyadri Science, Technology & Management Conclave is to address the issues currently faced and also explore opportunities to work towards energy efficiency or alternative energy sources.

Day 3, 9th January 2018 - ENVIRONMENT

Rapid industrialization and other allied human activities have offered significant challenges towards conservation of environment. Every human activity has direct ramifications on environment. Over-exploitation of natural resources is resulting in rapid degradation of environment. This leads to problems like global warming, population explosion, natural resource depletion, waste disposal, loss of biodiversity, deforestation, acid rain and urban sprawl. The emission of harmful toxic gases from industries causes depletion of ozone layer, thus exposing humans and other living beings to harmful radiations. To address these environmental issues there is a stringent demand to bring awareness among individuals and organizations. The government and law enforcing agencies need to take various measures to bring awareness among the general masses. The onus also lies with academic institutions to cascade this by organizing distinguished workshops and conclaves. The scope of introducing ENVIRONMENT theme in Sahyadri Science, Technology & Management Conclave is to identify issues and share the best practices that could be inculcated to conserve the environment.

Day 4, 10th January 2018 - HEALTH

Today, almost all the countries across the world face new challenges in the provision of preventive and curative health services. Life style, Migration, Ageing population, Climatic changes, and Political & Economic policies threaten the provision of high quality, affordable and equitable health care services. People’s opportunities for a healthy life and access to health care services are closely linked to the socio-economic conditions in which they live. Resilient and empowered people/communities respond better to economic, social and environmental change. Communities/people who are deprived of socio-economic opportunities also remain behind in health outcomes and their access to health services. People need to be empowered to manage their health more pro-actively, choose healthy lifestyles and make informed choices. The current problems in many countries with special reference to India are caused by the structural changes in the health care service system, life style and disease patterns. These call for the reforms and modernization of public health, health services and social care systems. There is a need for innovation - new combination of practices and approaches developed to better address social needs and expectations. New modes of collaboration between the public and private sector are also needed. Sahyadri Science, Technology & Management Conclave offers a great opportunity to discuss these issues in detail among researchers, policy makers and practitioners.
