14-Mar-2017

BMCDT - INFOSYS Foundation Bone Marrow Registry Awareness & Donor Registration Programme Dr. K M Srinivasa Gowda, Former Registrar, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences visited the campus and had discussion with Principal, Administrator, Director Research and AAO regarding an awareness programme to be conducted at Sahyadri about Bone Marrow Registry and its donation. This is a sponsored programme from Infosys and Bangalore Medical College Development Trust.

In our country every year, 150000 people suffering from blood cancer and other diseases need Bone Marrow Transplantation as the last resort. Last year, only 600 got it which means nearly 130000 or more people are dying due to lack of this treatment. The patient needs matching Bone Marrow from a healthy donor whose HLA type matches that of the patient which is difficult to get. In 30% of lucky people, they may get a donor among siblings or close relatives. But in other cases where an unrelated donor has to be found, it is extremely difficult and frightfully expensive.

Sometimes testing 20,000 people also may not get the hapless patient a matching donor, and each test costs Rs. 15,000/- The foundation needs young people to get registered as voluntary donors and is approaching all institutions where they make a small presentation and request the students to get registered as voluntary donors. The intent is to establish a registry with one million HLA typed donors, at the foundation cost and the services are free for the recipient. Foundation’s financing is from their Alumni and philanthropic bodies.
