MBA Dept. organized a One-Day International Conference on “The Role of Banks and Other Financial Institutions in Funding Support for the Sustainability of Start-Ups”

The International Conference was organized by Dept. of Business Administration-MBA on 28th May 2021 on virtual mode. Response was overwhelming with a total of 360 participants which had 5 Expert Speakers and 2 Moderators.
During the Inauguration, Dr. Rajesha S, Principal, addressed the Experts as well as the participants and shared the glimpse of Bhandary Foundation and its initiatives to convert Sahyadri into a Launch Pad of Start-ups. Adding to this, Dr. Vishal Samartha, Director-MBA Program, gave a brief introduction about the MBA Department and its achievements. Prof. Ramesh K G, Dean-Strategic Planning, gave a brief introduction of the topic selected for the conference.
During the Session 1 on the theme “Funding Support to Start-Ups”, the Moderator for the session Dr. Naveen Kumar K, Faculty and Bank Trainer, NIBM, Pune gave an Introduction of all the speakers. He spoke about the Ecosystem players i.e Government, SIDBI, Banks, Educational Institution and Supporting Institution with example of a start-up which recently grew into a Global organization. He also spoke about the Unicorns in India.
More insights were shared by Mr. Mukesh Malik, CEO, ProjectGK who spoke about the Funding support by Banks and other Financial Institutions for Start-ups. As an Entrepreneur he strongly believes in structured as well as on the ground learning, with the experience of 20 years and 100+ organizations, working towards building a world class consulting set up. He also brought out the difference between Financing and Funding by sharing examples and concluded his talk stating that Financing talks about History.
The next speaker - Mr. Chetan J Shrinali, Regional Partner, Venture Catalyst is a Law graduate and also an MBA, having 20 years of rich Cross Industry Experience and exposure from Insurance, Health care, Executive Search and Technology Products and Platforms. He engaged the session by highlighting the points on Evaluation Process by VCs in Funding Start-ups. He spoke about the Venture Capital core system and sub system. He shared Case Studies and gave example of OYO start-up showcasing its rapid growth. He pointed out that one should have a strong mindset to invest in Start-ups. On a question related to his Business Model, he said he is in a Business of Creating Wealth. He interestingly brought out the concept of “Dhandha and Bandha” when it comes to Venture Capital.
Next session was conducted by Mr. Sundeep Mohindru, Founder Director & CEO, M1Xchange. He is a Chartered accountant with more than 23 years of experience in Technology, Finance and Consulting. He spoke about the Role of Digital Platforms in Funding Start-ups and also shared his journey in Entrepreneurship. With the support of RBI, he has built an organization named - TReDS. TReDS is a future-ready, seamless, competitive, secure and paperless Trade Receivables market place which is adopted by more than 37 banks/NBFC Factors.
During the Session 2 on the theme - “Building Sustainable Business Model”, the Moderator, Mr. Johnson Tellis, Innovator & Entrepreneur, started the session by informing about the commendable work done by Dept. of Business Administration in providing their students a Hands-on experience of MBA Programme. He pointed out how the Social Innovation Programme, Immersive MBA and Add-on programmes have contributed to the overall development of students. Mr. Johnson then gave introduction about the panel members and also shared his views about the topic of the session.
Mr. Vinod Kalkotwar, Founder & President, Kalozal Consultants Pvt. Ltd. spoke about Sustainability of Businesses – pitfalls to avoid, characteristics and challenges of start-ups, by quoting the movie ‘Godfather’. He also gave LIVE examples from the real business world which made the session more interesting.
Mr. Vijetha Shastry, Executive Director, TiE Bangalore shared his life and own research experiences on the topics related to Health care start-up Cohort, Elevate programme by the Karnataka State Government, Brigade reap, and CISCO Launchpad inclusions. He also threw some light on Intellectual Property Rights. The session was followed by Q&A session in the presence of Mr. Ananth Ravi, Strategic Advisor of Sahyadri.
With this, the Conference came to an end with a great deal of learning experience through the sessions facilitated by the experts which included their journey in funding start-ups.
