 Inauguration of the Two-Day workshop on “Air Pollution and its Impact on Climate Change”

On account of World Environment Day 2019, observing the theme - Beat Air Pollution, a Two-Day workshop is organized by the Dept. of Civil Engineering in association with Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) during 28th to 29th June’19.

During the Inaugural ceremony, Dr. S Manjappa, Director-Research spoke about the World Environment Day and its history. The workshop as inaugurated by Sri. Kadlur Sathyanarayana Acharya, Principal District & Session Judge & Chairman, DLSA, Dakshina Kannada. In his address, he spoke about the various hazardous aspects affecting the environment and the role of every individual in mitigating the issues related to deterioration of environment.

Dr. R Lakshminarayan, Member, Karnataka Public Service Commission, Bengaluru, the Theme speaker of the inaugural ceremony briefed the audience regarding the implementation of Air Pollution Act through judicial bodies, importance of renewable energy, reasons of urban and rural air pollution and citizen civic sense that should exist amongst the fellow citizens to mitigate air pollution.

Sri. Rajashekar Puranik, Environmental Officer, KSPCB, Mangaluru, highlighted the various industries causing air pollution, common air pollutants and how they are dealt with. He also spoke about the various acts implemented by legislation and exercised by KSPCB.

Post inaugural ceremony, the first Technical Session was facilitated by Dr. H. Lakshmikanth, Environmental Officer, KSPCB, Udupi on the topic –“Air Pollution”. He shared various case studies concerning Air Pollution which was dealt by KSPCB, Udupi.

The second Technical Session was facilitated by Dr. Manippady Krishna Kumar, Chief Scientist, Champs Industrial Pte. Ltd, Singapore on “Indoor Air pollution and various new technologies developed to counter the same”.

The third Technical Session was facilitated by Dr. Srihari, Professor, Dept. of Civil Engineering, NITK Surathkal. He spoke about various sources of Air Pollution, major Environmental Acts/Rules/Policies in India, Air Quality Index, future trends in ambient air pollution and some of the recent innovations to tackle air pollution.

The fourth session was by Dr. Raj Mohan B, Professor, Dept. of Chemical Engineering, NITK Surathkal. He spoke about the impact of air pollution and its overall impact on climatic changes. He also touched upon the various precautions taken to save our environment and role of each stakeholder to normalize the environmental imbalance.
