Arena 2019 began with the inaugural ceremony in the presence of the Chief Guest - Mr. Ashton Wikin Coelho, National Athlete and an Alumnus of BE (Batch 2009-13); Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal; Mr. Balakrishna S S, Vice-Principal; Mr. Sadananda H S, Director of Sports; Ms. Nitisha Rodrigues & Mr. KarnaKumar K S, the Physical Directors, the HODs and the staff & students. At first, Sahyadrians marched forward in glory representing unity & discipline in a spirit of sportsmanship through March Past. During the inauguration, Ms. Gowri Ganesh, the Sports Secretary introduced the Teams of March Past to the Chief Guest. The programme then included Hoisting of the Flag that signifies the dignity & Integrity of athletes and unites all as a team. Later, the Chief Guest raised the Torch, bearing the light. Mr. Sashwath MR, National Athlete led the team through the oath. Moving on, the VTU Blues – Students who represented VTU in All India Level were honoured.

Mr. Ashton has completed his higher studies in Advanced Construction at National Institute of Construction Management and Research. He now works as Road Safety Contracting Expert & a Road Safety Consultant for Public Works Department and National Highways of Mangalore Division. He is an entrepreneur and founder of Cliwilton Road Safety Inter-ventures. During his inaugural address, he encouraged students to utilize their talent and make use of every opportunity they get. He recalled his good old days at Sahyadri Campus and stimulated students to have fun, be smart and work hard. He made a special mention of Dr. D L Prabhakara, Director-Sahyadri Educational Institutions for all that he did for the institution. He owed his achievements of 13 medals in sports to the Chairman – Mr. Manjunath Bhandary for his perpetual support.

Ms. Sushma from the Eighth Semester Electronics & Communication Engineering received a special recognition from the Chief Guest for winning 14 Medals during her course of study at Sahyadri. Mr. Ashton has also announced Rs 15,000 cash prize for the one who secures 13 medals and more by the end of their course at Sahyadri.
