An Alumni Symposium titled “ThinkTank Meet on the Post Covid Era- The New Normal” was organised by the Dept. of Business Administration.

Dr. Rajesha S, Principal expressed his pleasure of hosting ThinkTank Meet and encouraged the dept. to organise more of such valuable sessions. Dr. Vishal Samartha, Director, Dept. of Business Administration, expressed her deep happiness to her students achieving success at every path of their career.

Mr. Nishar Hussain

Think Tank Meet on the Post Covid Era- New Normal paved a way for Mr. Nishar Hussain to recollect his memories of Sahyadri. He said the world faced recession in 2000s and came up with many solutions. Temporarily, it is true that we are facing many problems but it will not stay for a long period of time. He said we need to update with the current technology to achieve success in career.


Mr. Shabarish S. Rao

Mr. Shabarish S. Rao, Area Retail Manager, Aditya Birla Fashion & Retail Ltd., gave an insight into how as students we must Survive, Review and Drive ourselves through this pandemic. Stay healthy, decide which industry to work on and upgrade yourselves, he urged. There is no second chance in today’s world, he warned. Individuals should be flexible without having any location constraints and must be able to adapt to changes. He concluded his talk by saying, “Let’s not lose hope!”.


Dr. Anandsa Habib

Dr. Anandsa Habib, Audit Officer, Karnataka State Audit and Accounts Department, Vijayapur gave insight into how this COVID era affected the government sector. The revenue of the government has reduced, which will hamper the development. Government has come up with Mudra Yojana and unsecured loans to MSME. As MSMEs are affected, the challenge for government is to bring things back on track. He also said that the government has reduced the intake at the moment, but in near future there will be many recruitments coming up. He concluded his talk by saying, “Let’s not lose hope!”.


Mr. Roystan Wilson D’Souza

Mr. Roystan Wilson Dsouza stressed on how one can be productive in this Lockdown period and insisted that students make use of the time to learn new skills and have a strong hold on Power Point, Excel, CV & prepare for mock interviews and also develop good network with good people.


Mr. Avinash Beermale

Mr. Avinash Beermale, Search Analyst – Digital Marketing, HP Inc., Bangalore, encouraged students to look at the positive side of the post COVID environment, where everyone is starting from Ground Zero. He also acknowledged the push given by COVID-19 on the Digital Marketing field by opening up new possibilities where the world is moving towards online and Digital Marketing being the next big thing.


Mr. Dhillon Dixon D’Souza

Mr. Dhillon Dixon D’Souza, Sales and Marketing Manager, Mobis Parts, Middle East, Dubai gave statistical insights about the effect of Covid-19 on the 5 majorly impacted industries viz. Aviation, Transport, Travel and Tourism, Food and Hospitality and Automobile. Mr. Dhillon advised the crowd not to think of a crisis where jobs do not exist, but instead focus on developing communication, presentation, technical and digital media skills and insisted on attending computer training. He further suggested taking check points from the mentors on improvement and then work on those points. He concluded saying Covid-19 might slow down the Job Market but if a person is skilled nothing can impact his/her existence in the corporate.


Mr. Adithya Kollaje

During the concluding part of the session, Mr. Adithya Kollaje, Recruitment Specialist, Juniper Networks, Bengaluru spoke. He cleared a main doubt most of the students are facing presently which is how the intermediate semester students getting promoted, is going to impact their recruitment. The speaker clearly insisted that the students work on skill development to tackle this problem and also shared his experience in the field of recruitment. Numerous insights on the opportunities in the post COVID era were specified by the speaker which will make every student industry-ready.

Dept of Business Administration-MBA is organizing an Online Three-Day PGCET Training for MBA Aspirants during 23rd to 25th July 2020

The Online Three-Day PGCET Training will be held during 23rd to 25th July 2020 from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm every day. Around 650 graduates from various places like Bengaluru, Thirthahalli, Shivamogga, Kumta, Madikeri, Kundapura, Karwar, Belagavi, Udupi & Bhatkal besides the students of Mangaluru have registered for the Training.

During the three days, sessions in four areas - Quantitative Analysis, Reasoning & General Intelligence, General Knowledge & Proficiency in English Language would be facilitated by CA Gopalakrishna Bhat, Founder of Trisha Group of Institutions; Mr. Vivekananda Kamath, Principal of Bransoft Academy, Brahmavara; Prof. Ramesh K G, Dean-Strategic Planning and Mr. Ankith S Kumar, Student Counsellor of Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, Mangaluru respectively. The programme would also include Mock Test to give students a hands-on experience about modus operando of PGCET.

The MBAs were addressed by HR Professionals during the first half, on 5th June'2020. The first session facilitated by Mr. LoysonPaes, Senior Learning Partner at Danske IT, threw light on the various HR functions and specialized functions in HR. He encouraged students to take up MBTI Assessment, understand the personality type and then choose their specialization accordingly. He also shared the Myths of HR Profession and clarified the real HR. In the concluding remarks, he mentioned that an MBA degree is the biggest armed weapon; however students should acquire additional skills through certifications for a rewarding career.

The next session was facilitated by Mr. Ben Subbarao, HR Head at Grassroots BPO Pvt Ltd. He shared around 10 Sutras for students aspiring to be future HR's, focusing on 2 main components – Analytically driven skills and Skills to Advise stakeholders.

Finally, Ms. ShivaniRai, Asst. Manager at HDFC Ltd, Bengaluru, who is an Alumna of Sahyadri MBA (2016-2018 Batch) addressed the students and shared how she transformed to be an HR and take up Operations Role. She emphasized on the importance of grooming self during the course of the study by taking up projects with utmost commitment and Certification courses which adds to the profile.

The MBAs were addressed by Marketing Professionals during the second half, on 5th June'2020. The first session facilitated by Mr. Rakshit Shetty, Operations Manager at Kelly IT and Financial Services, threw light on the importance of sales not merely in marketing but in any fields. He emphasized concentrating on improving digital marketing skills to lead a successful E-Marketing business during this pandemic situation. He also encouraged students to work on their interpersonal skills and advised them to choose their specialization wisely. In his concluding remarks, Mr. Shetty mentioned that along with subject knowledge, students should also acquire additional skills through certifications on marketing and analytics for a rewarding career. He ended the session by saying don’t confine yourself to one place or one subject, explore the opportunity.

The next session was facilitated by Mr. Harsharaj, Territory Sales Manager at Phonepe Pvt Ltd, Bangalore, who is an Alumnus of Sahyadri MBA (2015-2017 Batch). He began his session by emphasizing the importance of concept selling which is currently trending in the market and concentrated mainly on explaining the practical exposure that any sales person gets to experience in his/her field. He concluded by stressing the relevance of various skills and knowledge that are required to survive currently in the industry.

Finally, Mr. Nidesh Shetty Assistant Branch Manager, HDFC Bank, Tilakwadi, Belagavi, who is also an Alumnus of Sahyadri MBA (2016-2018 Batch) addressed the students and shared his work life journey and stressed on challenges faced. He encouraged students to come out of their comfort zone and be flexible to adapt to any kind of working conditions. While concluding, he advised students to take up innovative projects which could help them stand out in any situation.

Symposium on Pathway to Excellence in Finance

The MBAs were addressed by finance professionals on 6th June, 2020, as part of the symposium. The first session was facilitated by Mr. Powdhan Shetty, Branch Manager at Anand Rathi Shares & Stock Brokers Ltd. He threw light on various dimensions of career in finance. He said ‘MBA is not just a way to earn a degree, but a way to learn realities of life.’ In his concluding remarks, he asked the students to be unique from the rest of the crowd to meet the challenges of the market. The second session was facilitated by Mr. Kiran Kumar, Territory Manager at Reliance Nippon Life Insurance. He shared his own experience and gave insights on how to understand one’s weakness and work on it to make a bright career in finance.

The last session was facilitated by Mr. Achutha Shenoy, Audit Associate at KPMG-GDC. He touched upon various aspects of finance and gave students insights on importance of value added course, certification programmes and most importantly the significance of analytical skills in finance. He tried his best to answer all queries of students and in his concluding remarks he asked the students to become industry ready by acquiring the required skill-sets.

Dept. of Business Administration-MBA organized ‘Sahyadri Whiz-Quiz 2020', a quiz competition for undergraduates in the campus. Around 9,000 students participated in the college level quiz, out of which 990 students from selected 45 colleges in Mangaluru, Udupi, Kodagu, Karwar, Belagavi, Uttara Kannada and Kasargod were at the campus for the Grand Finale of the 6th edition of Sahyadri Whiz Quiz.

Mr. Praveen Kamath Kumbla, General Manager & HR Head, Global Delivery and Enablement, Wipro Limited, was the Chief Guest for the programme and Mr. Prakyath Bhandary, Associate-People & Culture Team, Grant Thornton LLP, Bengaluru was the Alumni Guest. Prof. Padmanabha B, Chief Coordinator of Sahyadri Whiz Quiz 2020 welcomed the gathering. Dr. Vishal Samartha, Director-MBA gave the introductory remarks. During the inaugural address, Mr. Praveen Kamath Kumbla spoke about how students should gear up and add skills to their profile in order to enter into an extremely competitive market. He emphasized on acquiring Language skills – Portuguese & Spanish and also Cultural Skills and embrace the change in the global market. He appreciated Sahyadri for its Start-Up culture and mentioned that students with entrepreneurial mindset are highly preferred. After Unveiling the Trophies, Mr. Prakyath Bhandary, spoke about his life at Sahyadri and how the institution shaped his future. He further urged students to take up opportunities that come their way to showcase their talent. He was delighted to recall his days of being the organizing committee member of the 1st edition of Sahyadri Whiz Quiz. Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal in his Presidential address conveyed that Sahyadri Whiz Quiz is one of the forums to develop the knowledge and skills and students should capitalize the opportunity available to them. Prof. Ramesh K G, Dean-Strategic Planning, gave the vote of thanks. Mr. Rakshith Shetty, CEO-Hakuna Matata, Bengaluru, was the Quiz Master. Immediately after the formal function, the first preliminary round was held. A total of 150 teams qualified to the second preliminary round. Finally 6 teams were selected for the Grand Finale. Mr. Divakar Kadri, Chairman of NIPM, Mangaluru Chapter & General Manager of Cardolite, Mangaluru felicitated the winners during the Concluding Ceremony.

The following teams emerged as winners:

• Team comprising of Skandakrishna, Trishul M V & Anurag from Mangalore Academy of Professional Studies (MAPS), Mangaluru, won 1st prize with a trophy and cash prize of Rs. 25,000;
• Sumanth K, Srirama & Vargise Thomas – Team from SDM College (Autonomous), Ujire, won 2nd place with a trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 15,000;
• Finally, the Team from Dr NSAM First Grade College, Nitte comprising of Gagan V Palimar, K Goutham & Rhea Menezes won 3rd place with a trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 10,000.

Induction Programme for the MBA Batch 2019 to be held during 16th to 24th Sep’19 was inaugurated by Ms. Sandhya V, Head – Business HR, Resideo India, a spinned off company of Honeywell. Prof. Ramesh KG, Dean-Strategic Planning welcomed the gathering.

Dr. Vishal Samartha, Director-MBA introduced Sahyadri and the Department to the new entrants. During the Inaugural Address, Sandhya appreciated the Voluntary Mentoring System at Sahyadri unlike other colleges that she visited, wherein students need to earn a Mentor and does not come to them easily. She urged students to invest their time & effort on tasks that have sheer purpose and impact. She said – “Make your Dream your Goal and work towards it”. She congratulated the students as they are now a part of an institution that provides world-class facilities to students.

Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal in his Presidential address mentioned about the increase in the number of in-house companies with the aim to provide internship opportunities as per AICTE Norms. He also encouraged students to take up Entrepreneurship as their career. Prof. Akshatha P, the Coordinator gave information about the sessions and activities lined up during the Induction Programme.

Bridge Course for New Entrants

A Six-Day Bridge Course for the new entrants to MBA Batch 2019 has been planned during 26th to 31st Aug’19 with sessions from in-house faculty and industry experts.

On 26th Aug’19, Dr. Vishal Samartha, Director-MBA encouraged students to navigate the institution website and stimulated the students to focus on their goals as there are enormous opportunities at Sahyadri including internships at in-house industries.

Prof. Ramesh K G, Dean-Strategic Planning addressed the students and shared the importance to learn, unlearn and relearn as they have just stepped into their professional course of MBA. He also advised to add passion and positive attitude to work as success is not easy and can be achieved only through hard work.

Prof. Manjunatha Kamath conducted series of activities which aimed at removing stage fear and helped students to develop Team Management Skills. Mr. Abhijith Karkera, Manager-Swiggy, Mangaluru facilitated a Brain storming activity and conducted Personality interview which encouraged students to be outspoken and come out of their comfort zone.

MBA Dept organizes a Discussion on Union Budget 2019-20

Dept of Business Administration-MBA organized a Discussion on the Union Budget 2019-20 on 11th October, 2019. The students undertook various sectors and analyzed the positive and negative aspects of the budget. Dr. Wajeeda Bano, Department of Economics at Mangalore University, briefed about the budget from an economist’s point of view. She also stressed on the fact that as a responsible citizen of the nation we have to analyze a budget from the point of an economist and financial expert rather than saying a budget is good or bad. Nation comes first and as citizens we should help the government in achieving the vision of our country by implementing the programs and schemes in a better manner. This programme was organized to analyze the various programmes and schemes announced in Budget 2019-20 presented by Hon’ble Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Ms. Nirmala Sitharaman aimed at promoting agriculture, industry, services, international trade, etc. and generate employment and spur the growth in the economy.

A One-Day Leadership Development Programme (LDP) was organized by the MBA Department for the undergraduate Student Council Members on 20th Sep’19. A total of 221 students from 22 colleges of Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu District participated in the programme. The programme was inaugurated by Chief Guest – Dr. K V Malini, Principal of Canara College, Mangaluru and Guest of Honour – Mr. Pruthvi Ambar, Sandalwood & Coastalwood Actor. Dr. Vishal Samartha, Director-MBA in her speech, welcomed the gathering and introduced Sahyadri to the participants. Prof. Sushma V, Chief-Coordinator of the programme spoke about the four-year journey of LDP at Sahyadri and how we have scaled higher in terms of number of participants as well as quality of the programme. Dr. K V Malini, in her inaugural address shared her perspective of being a leader and appreciated Sahyadri for organizing such a thoughtful event for outside students. Mr. Pruthvi Ambar spoke about his journey of being a follower and his efforts to be a Leader. Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal shared the Presidential address and in his speech he motivated students to note down the key takeaways of the sessions and practice in their role as a Student Council Member in their respective colleges.

The first session was facilitated by Dr. Vishal Samartha, Director-MBA on “Life Skills through Story Telling”. The second session was by Dr. Sharan Kumar Shetty on “Corporate Expectation from Budding Leaders”. Third session was conducted by Prof. Ramesh K G, Dean-Strategic Planning on “Leaders are not born, but made” and the last session was by Prof. Samarth Shenoy on “Lead, Follow or Perish”.

Post these sessions, participants visited the in-house companies in the campus and interacted with the industry heads. The day-long event concluded with the valedictory ceremony in which participants shared their opinion of the programme and the Resource persons were felicitated for their efforts in putting up a great show.

Dept. of Business Administration-MBA conducted a One-Day Faculty Development Programme (FDP) for Undergraduate teachers on 19th of September 2019. The programme was inaugurated by the Chief Guest – Dr. Umappa Poojary, Former President of ‘AMUCT’ and Associate Professor at Sri Gokarnanatheshwara College, Mangaluru. Key note address was delivered by Dr. Vishal Samartha, Director-MBA. She gave a brief highlight about Sahyadri to the participants. In the inaugural address, Dr. Umappa Poojary, spoke about the importance of Data Analytics in the current scenario and how important it is for the teachers to upgrade their competencies. He stated that ‘Data speaks louder than words’. He also mentioned that if we are not updated to data analytics, Alexa, Siri, Google would definitely replace us. Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal delivered the Presidential Remarks.

Dr. Azhar Shaheen Shaikh kick started the session on ‘Data and Analytics’ which was hands-on session in the Computer Lab primarily on SPSS software.

The afternoon session was taken by Prof. Girish M on ‘Cutting Edge – Marketing Analytics’ which was again a hands-on session on MS Excel. Prof. Sushma V facilitated the last session of the day on ‘HR Analytics - No Rocket Science’. She spoke about HR Analytics from the company perspective and shared Case Studies and various tools used in HR Analytics. The objective of the session was to make the participants comfortable with the subject.

The programme had 67 participants from 29 undergraduate colleges of Dakshin Kannada and Udupi districts. The programme received an overwhelming response from the faculty members of Undergraduate colleges.
