The Government of India has felt the need to initiate and encourage student interest in Science & Technology. IITs and IISc began organizing Science Conclaves every year to create awareness and interest among the students. However, organizing such a challenging event is a strenuous affair due to a high magnitude of institutions in the state. Therefore, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management feels that it is its responsibility to take this up as an initiative and has started Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt - SSTH.

Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt is an annual gathering in which eminent national and international scientists provide a platform for free interaction to young students and teachers in order to showcase the excitement of scientific works and investigations which will in turn motivate them to take up the study of science as their career.

This is a platform for students to exhibit their skills and knowledge in the form of science projects. It serves as a channel to interact, network and connect with other brilliant minds in the community as well as some of the well known research scientists of the nation.

The main objective of this program is to provide a platform for exhibiting new ideas and the creative work of young talent of PU/+2 colleges, creating curiosity towards science and latest technologies along with exchange of views and ideas with their peer group. Click here to know more

Projects & Nomination of Students for Project Funding

The program “Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt-2017” to be held on 11th November 2017, provides a platform to exhibit talents of budding young scientists, a panel for discussion on various topics of science, lectures presented by the scientists, question and answer sessions relating to basic science and applicationoriented themes. This program contributes to the generation of new ideas, encourages personal contacts, inspires scientific activities and enables the critical examination of scientific questions from a different perspective. A style of free environment for learning is adopted, whereby both formal and informal interactions take place to create interests, counsel and direction towards science education to young minds. The interaction sessions also involve laboratory work and scientific project demonstrations.

The program is basically conducted for PU+1/+2 students of with a total of 30 zonal centres covering more than 70 Colleges The institutions with relatively moderate student strength will be clustered under a single zone. The SSTH funds projects in order to encourage and motivate the young minds. Zonal level 7 project will be selected .

The selected participants of the zonal center will be eligible to participate in the final round of Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt 2017 program to be held on 11th November 2017 at Sahyadri Campus, Mangaluru.

  • Project/Working Model Exhibition: This event is for exhibiting and demonstrating working projects in any field of Science and Technology. The evaluation will be based on the innovativeness, feasibility and costeffectiveness, presentation skills and applications of the project.
  • Still Model Exhibition: This event is for demonstrating project ideas through models or prototype. The models may be physical or mathematical. The prototypes may be prepared using paper/plastic/thermocol/glass, etc. for demonstration. The evaluation will be based on innovativeness, feasibility, presentation skills and applications of the project.
  • * Innovative projects or inventions shall be guided to take out a patent by DTLabz.

  • Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management shall sponsor up to 40 Projects.
  • The team eligible for grants shall produce necessary bills, justifying the expenditures before receiving the next phase of the grants.
  • The zonal centre selected teams must and should participate in the final round at Sahyadri campus, only then are eligible for the prize amount and also the final phase of the grant.
  • All the prize money will be distributed in the SSTH Grand Finale 2017.
  • Only Winning / Participant Certificates will be distributed in the respective zonal centre.
  • All the participants shall fill the proposal without leaving any void spaces. Winners must submit a final report containing abstract (not more than 100 words), materials/equipments used, neat sketch, working procedure (not more than 300 words), applications, conclusion and references. (Sample format of the report can be downloaded online from www.ssth.in or can be obtained from the coordinator).
  • Judges decision will be final and has to be respected.
  • No team shall be tolerated for misbehaving or any act of indiscipline during the event. The teams shall be immediately disqualified/penalized/ take legal action if found harming the college property/ other individual's property/ an individual physically or mentally/ other participant's projects, etc.
  • Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management shall have all the legal rights to use, enhance, patent and commercialize the ideas proposed during the event.
  • In all circumstances the decision of the organizing college remains valid and no arguments will be entertained.
  • The college shall not bear any responsibility for the loss of individuals property or equipments or belongings or any harm caused to individuals.
  • The rules can be amended or subjected to change during the course of the event.

Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt – SSTH 2019

The Sixth Edition of SSTH 2019 was held with a mission to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in the South Kanara region. SSTH is an initiative of the young creative minds in line with 'Start-up India Mission’.

The event was inaugurated by Mr. Prashanth Prakash, Co-Founder - Erasmic and Founding Partner of Accel India. In his inaugural speech, he expressed how delighted he was to be part of this gigantic scientific event where young and budding minds are given an opportunity to innovate on ideas and exhibit their talent. It is a path-breaking programme for future innovators at a school level, he stated. He called them next-gen or future innovators. India, a country which has benefitted a lot from Information Technology, can now proudly boast of such talented young minds, who will be the future of India. Mr. Prakash was optimistic that these students will move on to be future scientist and innovators.

SSTH 2019 came to an end with a concluding ceremony graced by Dr. Bharath Shetty Y, MLA of Mangaluru City North; Mr. Prashanth Prakash, Mr. Ananth Ravi, Former Senior Vice-President, Reliance Jio Infocomm; Mr. Uday Birje, Mr. S Sridhar, Mr. Chethan Venugopal, Mr. Madan Padaki, Mr. Subramanian Sivakumar, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman-Bhandary Foundation; Dr. R Srinavasa Rao Kunte, Principal and Mr. Ashwin Shetty, Manager-NAIN Incubation Centre.

During the concluding ceremony, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary expressed how impressed he was with the social impact projects exhibited by the students. He said the solutions to the social concerns are in the hands of these children and selected projects will be hand-held at Sahyadri level and beyond. He said SSTH Projects were the seed to a Big Tree yielding fruits for all.

Mr. Prashanth Prakash was then felicitated by the dignitaries on dais and was congratulated for being appointed as the Chairman of Karnataka’s Start-Up Vision Group.

Participants then came forward to share their opinion on the daylong event and expressed how fortunate they felt to be a part of this event. Mr. Prashanth Prakash the addressed the gathering and appreciated the Chairman for his vision which drives the Start-Up culture at Sahyadri. He said Karnataka now stands as No.1 state in innovation. SSTH should reach every corner of the state in the years to come and help Karnataka to be a Model innovation state not only in the country but Asia and rest of the world.

Mr. Bharath Shetty while addressing the gathering appreciated the passion of Mr. Manjunath Bhandary in the field of education. He acclaimed that Sahyadri is the Best Engineering College he has ever visited.

Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt – SSTH 2018

The Grand Finale of SSTH 2018 was inaugurated very differently by Dr. Karisidappa, Vice Chancellor, Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) initially by opening the ribbon, then Lighting the Lamp with other dignitaries and also by coding in one of the SSTH Projects named – “Mini CNC” (Computer Numerical Control) developed by the 1st PUC students of Govinda Dasa College, Surathkal which printed a copy saying - “SSTH 2K18OPEN”.

Mr. Johnson Tellis, Project Co-ordinator gave a brief about SSTH, an annual event. He said it is a community initiative of Sahyadri and aims at imparting scientific knowledge in budding young enthusiasts. He mentioned that more than 100 colleges were reached out to, covering 15,000 students finally resulting in funding 300 projects of 1,500 students on the Grand Finale day. He said - during the course of SSTH event, the team has nurtured more than 100 scientific ideas. During his inaugural address, expressed his delight to be at Sahyadri where students of rural areas who are deprived of opportunities are given a forum with mentors from institute and industries. He said it is for the very first time in his 35 years of teaching career that he has participated in an event like this. He added that all scientific ideas come from the nature. Nature speaks to us and we should understand the nature’s language. If we understand this, we become globally renowned professionals. He urged the students to convert the projects to something which is beneficial to the society. He concluded his speech by re-iterating that the country will no longer be recognised for the wealth it has but only for the knowledge it possesses. Going forward, Knowledge Economy will be the talk of the town. The nation needs scientifically thinking students and Sahyadri is doing a great job in igniting the enthusiasm in the budding talents.

The in-house dignitaries - Dr. D L Prabhakara, Director–Sahyadri Group; Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman-Bhandary Foundation; Dr. Manjappa Sarathi, Director-R&D; Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal; Deans; Trustees and HODs of all departments were present during the inaugural and the Valedictory ceremony.

Later, a Panel Discussion was organized to throw light on the topic – “How students can leverage the Digital Resources available to them”. Mr. Siddharth Rajhans, Mr. Pranav Hebbar, Mr. Ved Prakash were the Panellists and Mr. Aakarsh Naidu was the Moderator of the Panel Discussion.

Highlights of the Discussion were as follows:

* LinkedIn, Facebook, Whatsapp and so on are the gateways to Digital future and students should utilize them effectively.

* It is imperative to do Self Evaluation on Passion Vs Fascination.

* Students should be encouraged to chase their passion where their competency lays.

* Further reading on “Nidhi Mayurika – At 15, This Brilliant Bengaluru Girl has won a NASA Contest Thrice”. Nidhi went through the sites of various academic institutions and enrolled into courses on AstroBiology

* Digital Education is just like Democracy – Democratize your learning and every student has an opportunity to discover what you want to learn.

* Language is not a barrier to learn and to build the nation The event concluded with the distribution of Prizes of SSTH 2018 by the esteemed guests.

SSTH 2017, the annual event was held in Sahyadri Campus in the august presence of Prof. S N Omkar, Chief Research Scientist, Dept. of Aerospace Engineering, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, Prof. Vijay H Desai, Senior Professor, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, NITK, Suratkal, Mr. M V Subramanian, Co-Founder & Managing Director of Future Focus Infotech Pvt. Ltd, Mr. Basanagouda M Patil, Director, BLDE Association, Columnist & Writer, Deccan Herald & The Indian Express, President, MPATIL Foundation & Dr. D L Prabhakara, Director, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management.

During the introductory remarks, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, Bhandary Foundation cascaded that the reason to conduct SSTH is to generate interest about science & technology among budding talents. He emphasized on how SSTH helps to shift from studying engineering to learning engineering and finally living engineering. He highlighted that the current 1st year engineering students of Sahyadri who participated in SSTH 2016 are now making names at IIT’s & NIT’s by winning places. He also re-iterated that Science & Technology Conclave would be held during Jan 6th to Jan 10th’18 in Sahyadri which would be an International Forum for students & teachers who are passionate about Science.

Prof. S N Omkar, while addressing the gathering expressed his happiness to be at the event and the initiative of Sahyadri to collect talent pools & ignite their minds. He also said – in the current scenario we have ideas & concepts, however fail to take it to the consumers. He stimulated students to take their labs to life. He referred to the discoveries of renowned scientists & conveyed that the greatest inventions happened through simple experiments and not through major funding.

Mr. Vijay H Desai in his speech expressed his delight towards the exhibits of the day’s event. He urged students to take up their career on their area of interest and not through influencers. He encouraged faculty coordinators of SSTH from various colleges to invite professionals in engineering to their college and allow them to share their real life experiences to students which shall groom them in a most efficient manner.

Mr. M V Subramanian congratulated the participants of SSTH as they are half engineers already due to their interest in projects & models. Once they pursue their course they shall be complete engineers & not mere graduates. Mr. M V Subramanian expressed his interest to mentor students on entrepreneurship and also advised them to host their projects on social networking sites which can fetch them appreciation and feedback. He concluded his speech by stating that “the best way of learning is teaching your friends” hence emphasizing the importance of peer learning.

Grand Finale of the Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt-2016

The Zonal Level Competitions of Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt-2016 held at forty four zonal centers across Karnataka over the last month culminated in the finale at the Campus. The zonal level winners took part in the finals at Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management who was host to 1500 students from 120 colleges. Close to 250 projects were put on display by all the participating High schools and PU colleges. The event was inaugurated by Prof. Gopalan Jagadeesh, Professor, Department of Aerospace Engineering, Indian Institute of Science(IISc), Bangalore and was symbolically inaugurated by Dr. Murli Dhar Tiwari, Vice Chancellor, Barkatullah University, Bhopal in the august presence of Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, Bhandary Foundation, Padmashri Prof. S. K. Shivakumar, Professor, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre and the former Director of ISAC, Director of ISRO and Dr. U. M. Bhushi, Principal, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management and Dr. C. K. Manjunath, Co-coordinator of SSTH-2016. Prof. Gopalan Jagadeesh in his inaugural address, stated the Trends and Perspectives in Development of Science and Technology and said that technology has the potential to develop a product, while Dr. Tiwari congratulated the Chairman, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary for the unique initiative of organizing SSTH and also wished that students graduated from Sahyadri would contribute to the country's growth.

Dr. C. K. Manjunath, Co-coordinator of SSTH-2016 welcomed the gathering. Mr. Deepak Thimaya, the moderator of SSTH-2016 gave a start to the panel discussion.

Dr. Murli Dhar Tiwari, Vice Chancellor, Barkatullah University, Bhopal, former and first Director of Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad (IIIT) also the first Director of Rajeev Gandhi Institute of Information Technology urged the students to take the benefits that are offered by the central universities for the improvement of societal activities. He said, Sahyadri is the only unique institute offering facilities and contributes for the betterment of the students.

Padmashri Prof. S. K. Shivakumar, Professor at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre and the former Director of ISAC threw light upon what Space means to a common man and enlightened regarding the Job opportunities associated in this field. He said India has made a mark in the Space program and many new innovations are happening, thus making India a frontliner. Research and Development has become the talk of the day. He advised the students to be well focused, work hard and put sincere efforts in their area of interest to achieve success.

Prof. Gopalan Jagadeesh, Professor, Department of Aerospace Engineering, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore appreciated the efforts put in by the participants in project display and Sahyadri for organising the event. He motivated the students to never give up, even if they come across failure in their experiment as an entrepreneur and also advised them to have self confidence, develop a good role model in life and use platforms to convert their projects to products.

There was a question & answer session which was answered by the dignitaries. Mr. Deepak Thimaya, the moderator of SSTH-2016 concluded the panel discussion stating that, Innovation will come up with the students hard work and their efforts. Efforts will take any individual to their growth.

At the valedictory, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, Bhandary Foundation delivered the presidential address. He congratulated the students for their efforts and enthusiastic participation in the SSTH-2016. He stated that it is not only academics which is the criteria to excel but along with academics, talent, intelligence and passion is very important because these young minds are the future scientists and entrepreneurs of developing India. He called upon the students to use the platform provided by Sahyadri and interact with eminent invitees and develop their knowledge. He emphasized on converting Project to product.

The event was inaugurated by the lighting of the lamp in the august presence of Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, Bhandary Foundation, Dr. G.Nagalingappa, Professor and Chief Mentor, Silverlining.edu, Mr. Dharmendra Singh, Global Head- Post Merger Integration-Corporate M&A, Schneider Electric, Mr. Satyen Parikh, Founder & CEO at Team Talent & Empowerment Consultants, Mr. Yogananda, Special Officer, VTU, Belagavi, Dr. U.M. Bhushi, Principal, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management and Prof.Sudheer Shetty, Co-ordinator of SSTH-2015.

The panel discussion opened with the Principal, Dr U.M. Bhushi being the moderator. Dr. K. Byrappa, Vice Chancellor, Mangalore University opened his statement in appreciation of the wonderful concept which has ignited the young minds drawn from different parts of the state. He said that research is a passion which has to be nurtured. He encouraged the participants to think on these lines and etch out a career in the same.

Dr. G. Nagalingappa, Professor & Chief Mentor, Silverlining.edu, addressed on the software and hardware industries and how they are important in educating the students on lines of opportunities. He said that the companies today look for multiple skills in people and the present generation being tech savvy and multi-talented have an advantage with digital communication at all levels.

Mr. Dharmendra Singh Global Head- Post Merger Integration-Corporate M&A Schneider Electric congratulated the participants and said that every participant is a winner. He assured the participants that he would render support in their projects and help them convert them into products. He encouraged the students to think out of the box and pursue their interest and be innovative.

Mr. Satyen Parikh, Founder & CEO at Team Talent & Empowerment Consultants, appreciated the efforts put in by the participants and Sahyadri for organising the event. He stated that we are the biggest critics of ourselves in seeing success and the biggest hurdle which lead to our failure. He motivated the students to connect the dots and thereby extend to the next level.

There was a question & answer session which was answered by the dignitaries. The dignitaries assured their full support to the budding scientists.

At the valedictory, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, Bhandary Foundation delivered the presidential address. In his motivating speech, he said that it is not only academics which is the criteria to excel but along with academics, talent, intelligence and passion is very important. He called upon the students to use the platform provided by Sahyadri and interact with eminent invitees and develop their knowledge. For the question posed by a student on when India will be developed, he said that if India has to develop then "I" should be the change. He further emphasised that SSTH is a step towards that change.

The Zonal Level Competitions of Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt-2014 held at twenty-nine zonal centres in Karnataka and Kerala over the last month culminated in the finale at the Campus with the zonal level winners taking part in the finals in Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management who was host to 1200 students from 200 colleges. Close to 100 projects were put on display by all the participating PU colleges. The event was inaugurated by Mr. Srinivasan Venkat (KVS), Tech Mahindra. In his inaugural speech to the gathering he said that he was happy to be a part of Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt-2014. It is a very good opportunity to utilize this programme and called upon the students to extract as much as they could for their future. He said, "Do it now. Sometime later it becomes never." Dr. T. G. Sitharam, IISc., Bangalore, Dr. Abhishek Vaish, IIIT-Allahabad and Dr. S. Ananth Raj, Vision Group on Science & Technology, Bangalore, were the Guests of Honour.

Dr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, Bhandary Foundation in his presidential address, conveyed his joy to the students by saying that it was his vision and thanked Prof. Kareem, the chief co-ordinator and all the faculty members who made this event come true. In his motivating speech, he said that it is not academics which is the criteria to excel but along with academics, talent, intelligence and passion is very important. He called upon the students to use the platform provided by Sahyadri and interact with eminent invitees and develop their knowledge. The SSTH will be an annual event with Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management having earmarked Rs. 25 lakhs every year to fund student projects. Dr. Umesh M. Bhushi, Principal, welcomed the dignitaries and the gathering. In his enlightening speech he said that the aim of the College was to change rote learning into learning through projects.

Prof. Kareem, the chief co-ordinator of the event declared the Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt-2014 open. The day-long events witnessed students showcasing their talent in projects, models, essay-writing and quiz competitions. They had the opportunity to interact with the guests individually as well as through a panel discussion. There was a question & answer session which was answered by the dignitaries. The dignitaries assured their full support to the budding scientists.

Mr. Srinivasan Venkat (KVS), Tech Mahindra addressed the M.Tech. and MBA placed students and faculty in a separate session. He spoke about the opportunities available once they complete their post graduation. He emphasised on the urge to learn and advised them on how to get into the IT profession.

During the Valedictory function prize winners were awarded certificates and cash prizes. The Overall Championship was bagged by Expert PU College, Mangalore.
