During periods of recession, an economy usually experiences high unemployment rates eventually scarcity of job. There are many proposed causes, consequences, and solutions for unemployment.

Startups gradually helps in increasing the economic activity levels of a nation which is necessary for expansion of the economy to accommodate new job seekers that come into the civilian labor force on a yearly basis. It helps in improving the technology advantage of a nation for future development and growth of the economy.

There is a very important role for entrepreneurs to spark economic development by starting new businesses, creating jobs, and contributing to improvement in various key goals such as GDP, exports, standard of living, skills development and community development.

The Entrepreneurship Cell commonly known as SE-Cell, here at Sahyadri Campus is mainly Focused on energizing the students as well as faculty by creating Awareness on the Development of Startup's. The Sahyadri Entrepreneurship Cell (SE-Cell) aims to ignite the creative thinking of students towards innovation and thereby mentor them to become successful entrepreneurs by providing the right entrepreneurial ecosystem. It will act as an incubator and provide students necessary infrastructure, mentoring and resources in making them successful business set-ups.

Here we Create and develop an ecosystem where innovative ideas are nurtured into successful entrepreneurial ventures Opportunities are created for students and budding entrepreneurs to pursue their ideas with passion by providing the right environment and infrastructure in building a successful enterprise.

Sahyadri college of Engineering & Management E-Cell in association with New age incubation network conducted a hackathon at Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management.

Hackathon 2020 is a nationwide initiative to provide students a platform to solve some of the pressing problems we face in our daily lives, and thus inculcate a culture of product innovation and a mindset of problem solving. Hackathon was focused in knowing the student’s capabilities of handling challenges in the workplace to create world class solutions for some of the top organizations including industries in the world, thus helping the Private sector hire the best minds from across the nation.

Total of 25 teams participated in the event ,The hackthon was specifically focused on the sectors like agriculture and rural development ,Robotics & Drones,Health & Biomedical devices,Engery and renewable energy ,smart communication ,security,survellience ,Smart Vehicle ,finance and Education.

The Team DSOSC was the winner of the event, Team members includes Basavarajeshwari Ambi, Shashank S, Akashdeep Bhagat, Afroz Hussain, Nathaniel Ryan and Muhammad Bilal along with mentors Musthaq Ahmeed and Rumaan Kalander under the guidance Mr. Prashant Duddela .

Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt – SSTH 2019 The Sixth Edition of SSTH 2019 was held with a mission to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in the South Kanara region. SSTH is an initiative of the young creative minds in line with 'Start-up India Mission’.

The event was inaugurated by Mr. Prashanth Prakash, Co-Founder - Erasmic and Founding Partner of Accel India. In his inaugural speech, he expressed how delighted he was to be part of this gigantic scientific event where young and budding minds are given an opportunity to innovate on ideas and exhibit their talent. It is a path-breaking programme for future innovators at a school level, he stated. He called them next-gen or future innovators. India, a country which has benefitted a lot from Information Technology, can now proudly boast of such talented young minds, who will be the future of India. Mr. Prakash was optimistic that these students will move on to be future scientist and innovators.

SSTH 2019-20 came to an end with a concluding ceremony graced by Dr. Bharath Shetty Y, MLA of Mangaluru City North; Mr. Prashanth Prakash, Mr. Ananth Ravi, Former Senior Vice-President, Reliance Jio Infocomm; Mr. Uday Birje, Mr. S Sridhar, Mr. Chethan Venugopal, Mr. Madan Padaki, Mr. Subramanian Sivakumar, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman-Bhandary Foundation; Dr. R Srinavasa Rao Kunte, Principal and Mr. Ashwin Shetty, Manager-NAIN Incubation Centre.

During the concluding ceremony, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary expressed how impressed he was with the social impact projects exhibited by the students. He said the solutions to the social concerns are in the hands of these children and selected projects will be hand-held at Sahyadri level and beyond. He said SSTH Projects were the seed to a Big Tree yielding fruits for all.

Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt – SSTH 2019 Mr. Prashanth Prakash was then felicitated by the dignitaries on dais and was congratulated for being appointed as the Chairman of Karnataka’s Start-Up Vision Group.

Participants then came forward to share their opinion on the daylong event and expressed how fortunate they felt to be a part of this event. Mr. Prashanth Prakash the addressed the gathering and appreciated the Chairman for his vision which drives the Start-Up culture at Sahyadri. He said Karnataka now stands as No.1 state in innovation. SSTH should reach every corner of the state in the years to come and help Karnataka to be a Model innovation state not only in the country but Asia and rest of the world.

On this occasion, Sahyadri got to host three eminent personalities, Ms Elena Churina, Chairman, Agency for Innovative Development of Regions; Mr. Kim Peng Foo, Adjunct Associate Professor, Entrepreneurship, Singapore University Technology Design and Dr Abhishek Vaish, who has served as the Head of Science and Technology Wing of the Embassy of India, Moscow, as the panel of judges.

In India, innovation is still not the epicenter of education. In order to achieve the cultural shift and to ensure that ‘Innovation and Startup’ culture is the primary fulcrum of our higher education system, a lot of initiatives have been taken at the government level.

An insight into In-Unity 2019:

A campus tour was conducted to give a clear insight on what Sahyadri is doing, what its vision is and how it is realising its vision.

Fifteen teams including winners of Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt (SSTH) 2019 pitched their ideas to a panel of judges. Each team was allotted 5 minutes for presentation and 3 minutes of Q&A session. These shortlisted projects had a training for the last two weeks to help pitch these ideas.

5 teams have been selected for incubation under the Sahyadri Hub for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

In-Unity 2K19 is organized at Sahyadri An interactive session with the entrepreneurial aspirants of Sahyadri was organized so that they can benefit from the insights of the international delegates. Students with an incredible caliber and brilliant ideas got to pitch the same to these guests and five teams from the sixteen that pitched are to be incubated here.

This event was a learning experience for all the participants and volunteers alike as they got to interact with some of the best minds of the world. Everybody had something to take away from this.

5.NavIC Hackathon in association with ISRO

ISRO NavIC was organized at Sahyadri, The event was inaugurated by Mr. Manish Saxena, Mr. Akhileshwar Reddy, Mr. AkshayPande, Ms. KanikaJakhar and Mr. Prasun Kumar. This was followed by a workshop headed by the Senior ISRO Scientist - Ms. KanikaJakhar, explaining briefly about NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) including data transfers through Bluetooth, USB cable and through GPRS. The next session was handled by CEO of DSI - Mr. Sachin Ganesh & team, who briefed about practical use of these devices and use of MIT App Inventor.

After attending workshops and the sessions, participants worked on projects implementing the NavIC devices provided by ISRO. The participants enthusiastically started working on their own idea which required the choice of devices provided and implementing it using an application or a website.

On 21st Sep, 2019, there was a technical talk given by Mr. Manish Saxena, which was conducted for students from Dept. of Electronics & Communication and First year followed by the technical assistance by DSI and supported by other launch pads.

The 36 hours ISRO Hackathon came to an end with all participants gaining knowledge about their idea and getting exposed to NavIC modules by providing a hands-on experience to them.

The Hackathon concluded on 22nd Sep, 2019, with the pitching session by 20 teams coming from various colleges including MITE, SDIT, SJEC, Indian Navy, MITS, BIT, MHSC, IIAEM-Jain University, EEC, SMVITM, and SMVEC. After which, there was an evaluation session done by the ISRO jury members. The event ended with a Valedictory Ceremony.

MANTHAN-2020, Business Plan Presentation Event organized by Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) in association with K-Tech NAIN and SHINE Foundation on 1st and 2nd February 2020 held at Sahyadri college of Engineering & Management.

The program commenced with ingural function, followed by product pitching from the students, there were 48 teams participated in the event from various colleges in and around Mangalore among that 14 teams were from Sahyadri.

The jury members for the presentation were Dr. B Amarnath-chairman Manthan committee FKCCI, Ms Indirani Mukherjee- Founder of bambooz, Mr B R Vishwanath- Co founder Lrillic Pvt Ltd, Mr Ankur Bhasin- CEO Bhasinsoft India Ltd, Mrs Tejashree Narayan- Managing partner JV Global service LLP, Dr Kumar Kenche Gowda- Principal VCIT Bengaluru. The results are awaited and the selected students will be participating in the final round which is going to be held in Bengaluru on February 15.

MANTHAN reaches out to the Under Graduate, Graduate, post-Graduate and diploma students from Institutions all over Karnataka. Once students receive entries, the student are assisted to prepare business module. Then the proposals are evaluated in order to choose the best innovative, technically feasible, commercially viable and implementable Business Plans. The winners are awarded with total cash prize of Rs.3,00,000/-.

A session on “Experience Economy driving Entrepreneurship &Innovation was conducted at Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management on 27th January in association with SHINE Foundation and K-tech NAIN at the zonal level by Mr. Uday Birje, Co-Founder & Director at Think street Technology and Mr. B S Baliga, Mentor for change at Atal Innovation Mission.

The session was primarily focused on conveying the message that “experiences are the new products”. The attendees were briefed about how associating an experience with a service adds additional weightage to the service and increases longevity of a start-up. Discussions were held on innovation and ideas were sparked regarding different ways to innovate. There was a discussion on the importance of start-ups and that innovations are a major part of every start-up. A deep dive was conducted on topics like The Experience Economy, Sharing Economy, Digital Economy, Co-Working Economy.

Following these, Mr. Baliga gave an insight about “Opportunities for start-ups”, “Different funds available”, “The importance of having a mentor for every start-up”, “The governments initiatives to support start-ups” etc.

Hackathon was organized as a part of IoT Challenge 2019 by Sahyadri E-Cell to promote entrepreneurial culture and to promote students to build solutions. The event witnessed close to 280 17 participations and indulged themselves in 28-hour long proof of concept building session.

The makeathon conducted by Sahyadri E-Cell, aimed to promote critical thinking and creativity amongst its students through the idea of innovation. Rustathon2k18, the first ever event based on RUST programming language in Mangaluru was organized by Sahyadri E-Cell in collaboration with Mozilla community in association and New Age Incubation Centre and Sahyadri Hub of Innovation Centre and Entrepreneurship. Rust is a system programming language important to the future of the web. It runs blazingly fast, prevents segfaults and guarantees thread safety.

8.GAME JAM 2k18

GAME JAM 2k18, 24 hr Hackathon event organized by the Sahyadri E-Cell in collaboration with Department of Information Science &, Engineering in association with Juego Studio, Students Technical Association of Information Science & Engineering (STAISE) in association with NAIN was inaugurated by Mr. SumanBalakrishna, CEO Juego Studio and Mr. Abhijith Shetty, VP – Delivery, Juego Studio.

Tech Vision 2018 is a one-day intra-collegiate project competition. The main objective of this event is to inspire young minds of the engineering students by providing them a platform to demonstrate their skills and knowledge through projects..

10.DEV HOST:18

Devhost:18 an event organised by Sahyadri E-Cell in collaboration with Sahyadri open source community in association along with NAIN. An interactive session was conducted by Swathi Bavanaka, COO of Evibe and an inspiring women Techspeaker who spoke on UX (user experience). The next session was conducted by Subash Konda, a software engineer II, Microsoft spoke on Modern data science. Students from various college actively participated in the event.

A session on “Innovation &, entrepreneurship” by TIE Bangalore was facilitated by Mr.Baliga BS, Member of TIE,Bangalore. Mr.UdayBirje,Co-Founder of Think street Technologies & Member of TIE,Bangalore chapter. Mr. Uday Birje in his sessions on“Innovation & entrepreneurship”,urged the students to be leaders than a follower and mentioned that through innovation and StartUp, one can lead a team and become a leader.

It was an interactive session with the students regarding the concepts and also about the vertical to develop innovative solutions for a Smart City..

13. One day training on blockchain

The training program started with a formal inauguration. Dr. Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal, Dr. Rajesha S.,Dean (Academics), Dr. J.V. Gorabal, HoD, Computer Science & Engineering (CSE), faculties of CSE and ISE were present. The training program was divided into two sessions. The first session focused on theoretical aspects of Blockchain and Algorithm associated with Blockchain. Second, was a practical session fully focused on Smart Contract and Ethereum.

The “Train the Trainer” workshop for faculty members as a part of the Boot Camp of StartUp India Karnataka Yatra organized in collaboration with K-Tech Innovation Hub, regards to E-cell Sahyadri, MHRDs Innovation Cell, GOI and New Age Incubation Network (NAIN).

Sahyadri E-Cell presents CodeQuest2k16, Mangalore’s biggest coding festival. Total of 150 students from all over Karnataka participated in the event. Code Quest was carried out in two phases. In the 1st Phase, 4 workshops were conducted namely IoT, Android, Word press and Corporate Awareness. 2nd Phase consisted of Mega Event of Code Quest with Hackathon, Code Hunt and Counter Strike.

The workshop was conducted by Mr. Allabux, CEO, Founder All.in.box, who spoke about the Resource Management and shed light on several ways to obtain resources may it be financial resources or human resources. The other deligate was Mr. Arun, CTO-Chief Fund Advisor, Laabh Technology Ventures, who shed light on India's rising entrepreneurs and India being the 3rd largest start-up base in the world. He then enlightened the students on entrepreneurship ecosystems which include Business, start-up, entrepreneur and entrepreneurship and Mr. Mudith, Consultant, Laabh Technology Ventures, who spoke on a business model generation - canvas by taking an example of the start-up present in the session.

Webinar on Preparing for a career The session was graced by Mr. Renjith Keshav who gave insights on how to choose the right path and the skills that one must hone/possess to excel in their career. The session made everyone realize that career is the long-term goal which need years of dedicated work and networking would help a person grow in life. Whereas jobs are the short-term goals which need not need networking aspect.

The session mainly focused on educating people about the products and set of products that they have and embrace it meaningfully. Problem with academic system is the lectures don’t have the experience in the real world. Opportunities that are arising is immense so to make a best out of it should be our moto. There is no secret to success it’s not the destination that make sone glow but the journey that they have will.

Engagement with people is very important in these times. We should have diversified people with us. We will have to prepare ourselves to handle these challenging times by re-engaging, rethink, rework, workforce and work place. Positive attitude with proper action only increases the probability of success doesn’t guarantee you success. One has to align themselves to what they are expected to do keeping in mind the situation at that point of time. Behaviour plays vital role in life, during these times one should have self-belief that he/she will bounce back. The courage and direction are very important factor, as the elders would show us the right path. One must have enthusiasm and energy to tackle the situation.

How can women take up leadership roles/become entrepreneurial

One should be adaptable as there is always a change and keeping yourself updated while having curiosity to learn. Leader is not the only one who will have to sit in top but has to facilitate everybody else in the team to do what they are supposed to do may be by giving them encouragement, resources and so on. One should be optimistic as well empathy and have consistency to grow. This has opened doors for women to take up new venture. To embrace entrepreneurship, one has to have trust on himself/herself, just be confident enough that you will do it and believe in it. This is the time where you can plan on your ideas and dedicate yourself into it. Societal challenges are immense but one has to owner their ideas then the society will own it too. The biggest challenge would be convincing ourselves whether I am capable of doing it or not, these are hardest because its internal.

Education has to ignite the students. Teaching a method which encourages Primary stage the parents has to get curiosity in students and teachers. The later stage the students themselves. The approach should change where students should start taking risk for which the education system has to change. Students should take owner ship of the career. Freedom to students, creates place for experimentation. Mindset of the students has to changed and the curiosity should be developed within the students. Freedom to fail at right point of time. Education system cannot be blamed always it has been doing great work in its field. Winners put a very high price on the time. We need to make sure we are not using time unintentionally, beware of time. Winners take complete ownership of their life. Winners build their own inner resilience which includes having a support system. .
